Bill Mauldin's Greatest World War II Cartoons Bill was born on a farm in New Mexico, Mauldin made his first cartoon "sale" to an animal medicine company when he was nine years old, with a cartoon showing a boy and girl crying over a puppy's grave.
From this small beginning, Mauldin went on to win international fame with his pithy comment on the life of the GI during World War II. That famous pair of bedraggled, mud-slopping GI's, Willie and Joe, have become as much a part of the American heritage as Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.
