Stupid Things People Do: When They First Join the Military

When you think about military personnel, certain things come to mind like courage, dedication, commitment, honor, respect and selflessness. When you think about military personnel outside of the uniform, other things might come to mind like broke, always in trouble, married young, expensive car and drinkers. Donte L. Sams from Newport News, VA wrote a book that informs the newly enlisted and soon-to-be enlisted military members about the common mistakes that can be avoided when not in uniform. The book is called “Stupid Things People Do When They First Join the Military”.

The book is 92 pages with 21 topics. Each topic has a problem and solution that range from “Marry the first person they have sex with” to “Buying a brand new car.” There are two characters in the book. The first character is Brofus Collinbean who represents a person who never gets anything right in the Military. The second character is Lonely Mcknightus who represents the loneliness emotion. Each topic has two pictures that illustrate the cause and effect of the problem.

“Military members are prepared and trained for combat, deployments and their job but they are not prepared for that car dealer, E-1 and up store or that $5,000 credit card limit approval” said Donte. “A book didn’t exist until now, about the common mistakes that happen when not in uniform and how to avoid them.”

So who is Brofus? His first name is Brofus… last name is Collinbean. He is the main character in the book "Stupid Things People Do When They First Join the Military." Throughout the book, Brofus keeps making really poor choices. He represents the stupid things people do. The book is NOT in any way attempting to portray all enlisted as ignorant. But it exists to light heartedly enlighten those stepping into the unknown (while hopefully bringing some comic relief to those familiar with the plight of anyone who has been a "Brofus").
